Owner Comments:
This is an extremely rare, bronzed variety of the HK-157 Declaration of Independence medal from the 1892-3 World’s Columbian Exposition. It is not listed in either edition of Hibler & Kappen’s So-Called Dollars: An Illustrated Standard Catalog, presumably because it was unknown at the time. However, it was assigned the HK number 157A by NGC when it was submitted for grading and is catalogued as SH 6-30.1 BZ (Coin orientation) in Shevlin & Hyder’s book “So-Called Dollars Volume 1: United States Expositions”. It is made of bronzed white metal and has a diameter of 40mm. Graded MS-65, this piece is the finest known and only example of this medal that has been certified by NGC. Shevlin & Hyder’s book lists the rarity for this medal as R8 (5-10 known).
