We start with a "Previously in Avengers" although, bar one sentence, none of it has actually happened previously. Nope, just a clever way of setting up the story and tease a few upcoming events/new characters. The short of it is Steve Rogers and Tony Stark decide that as problems keep getting bigger, the Avengers need to as well.
A month later on Mars a golden alien, Ex Nihilo, is hurling origin bombs at Earth in order to transform it into a perfect world. He's even having a trail run on Mars by making a perfect man. Alongside him is a wisp-like lady, Abyss, who pretty much thinks destruction is the only thing that can fix the Earth. The third member of their group is the robot Aleph, who serves as umpire and will decide whether the Earth will be transformed or destroyed. Anyway, the Avengers core team (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Bruce Banner/Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye) take exception to the Earth being bombed and decide to head to Mars for a chat. By chat, I mean fight. However, Abyss takes out Hulk by brainwashing him and setting him on Thor, Ex Nihilo deals with Iron Man, Black Widow and Hawkeye, leaving Aleph to stop Cap. Cap is about to be beaten to death by Aleph when Ex Nihilo decides that's not very nice and sends him back to Earth to prepare mankind for their imminent defeat.
Three days and a few band aids later, Cap wakes up and assembles the rest of the Avengers, ready for round 2.

In the past, Tony and Steve discuss what their approach should be to creating this new team. They decide that first of all, they need a limited roster until there is need for more. The two of them are a given, as well as Thor. They both agree on adding Hawkeye and Black Widow and Tony recommends the Hulk as well. Steve questions this, but agrees. They decide that the expanded roster needs to be a mix of both new and old members. They pull up a list of potential candidates. Steve asks why Luke Cage and Doctor Strange are not on the list, and Tony tells him that he already asked Luke and he wasn't interested, and that Strange is busy.
Wolverine is the first to be recruited, and Tony gets him by telling him they have beer. Spider-Man is the second, who is recruited after they tell him they have money. Shang-Chi is the third to be recruited, and Tony comments that he his efficiency, movement and power generation are off the charts, and that he's an expert in the traditional arms of his disciplines, but tells him that he's thinking of combining his more traditional styles with more enhanced technology.
Canonball and Sunspot are the fourth and fifth to be recruited, initially uninterested in joining what they thought to be another X-Men team, but eager to go from hated and feared as X-Men to loved and adored as Avengers. Mainfold is the sixth to be recruited, initially uncertain that he is fit to be a hero, but is talked into joining by Captain America. Captain Marvel and Spider-Woman are the seventh and eighth to be recruited after a rousing speech from Captain America.
In the present, Abyss examines the Avengers and comments that Thor is something different from the rest and that neither the Tree which is holding him and his fellow Avengers, nor she herself could break him down to his base bits, as if he doesn't fully exist or originate from the here and now, finally remarking that they have found a god. Ex Nihilo asks him if he as a god is familiar with creation stories?
Thor begins to tell him about Asgard, when Ex Nihilo interrupts him and tells him that he is more interested in what closes the loop, asking whether there is a resurrection or an apocalypse waiting for him. Ex Nihilo then tells him his own story. At the dawn of everything there existed a race called the builders who worshipped the Universe herself. As they grew and evolved, they created aggressive systems to direct, shape and control space-time itself. The first of these gardeners - the Alephs - were sent out to purge species unfit for their new Universe.
For hundreds of millions of years, the Aleph that now is with them razed worlds and killed species, until he one day found one worthy of evolution. He then released the garden he carried with him and from two of his seeds sprung Ex Nihilo and his sister Abyss. Ex Nihilo tells Thor that this is what he wants to do for Earth.
Meanwhile, on Earth, Captain Marvel and Falcon monitor Stark Satellites and detect multiple meteor like objects descending on Earth. These objects kand in Kobe, Chatapur, the Savage land and Norway, where they begin to spawn creatures and terraform the environment. Captain America remarks that he knows exactly who did this and that he needs to be stopped. Wolverine tells him that the team have only been together for six hours, but Captain America tells him that they have no choice. He tells Mainfold to open a portal to Mars and the team departs.

In Mars,on the garden, Ex Nihilo, Abyss, And Aleph stay with the captured Avengers Thor, Tony Stark, Black Widow, The Hulk, And Hawkeye. Ex Nihilo Explains that he has created a new Adam for the earth he will remake. The adam frees himself from his cocoon, and starts mutteering in builders code. Ex Nihilo explains that this was new and unexpected, before being shot with Hyperion's Lasers. We now see that Captain America, Smasher, And Hyperion are here. Cap goes up to Tony, and Tony says that he thought the plan was to call everyone. Cap says "It Was. I Did." He then presses A button in his helmet, and Eden teleports him and the fellow Avengers to the garden. They battle, and Abyss takes control of the Hulk, who later breaks free. The Avengers break the captured ones free.
Eventually, Captain Universe presents herself, and Ex Nihilo And Abyss bow down to her. Aleph says "ERROR: Deity Negative" and refuses to accept that she is the mother. She Vaporizes him, and The Avengers take the Adam with them. When Ex Nihilo asks why, Cap says that they made him human, and he needs to be with his own kind. Ex Nihilo Says "You Have To Wonder, Don't You? Out of all the worlds, the Mother chose yours." The Cap responds, "You Want My Best Guess? It's An Avengers World."

Fives sites on Earth have been successful identified as where the origin bombs that Ex Nihilo sent in Issue 1 have struck and have all been contained. But then, Hyperion discovers another site in the Savage Land. We then have two stories told intermixed with each other: Hyperion’s history and the Avengers going to the Savage Land to get to the sixth origin bomb. For ease of review I’m going to split them up in the whole stories at once and not intermix them like in the comic.
We learn how Hyperion was sent to Earth from a dying world. How a man found and raised him to help society, fighting for truth without compromise and other noble traits. But there was another Hyperion, hidden deep within. Anyway, the people of Hyperion’s Earth had made another Earth (somehow) and the coming together of these two worlds leads to their destruction, and the destruction of two entire universes. Hyperion, however, survived this and was later pulled into Earth 616 by A.I.M. where they locked him up, out of the sunlight – the source of his powers, until the Avengers busted him out and offered him a place on the team.
In the Savage Land, a small team of Avengers including Spider-Woman and Hyperion investigate and ultimately discover A.I.M. with a pod formed by the origin bomb. The A.I.M. team have already killed one of their interns by injecting him with a sample taken form the pod (just to see what’ll happen), when the corpse start sprouting tentacles which attack the scientists. Thor uses Mjolnir to zap the corpse and Hyperion burns the remains with his laser vision. Just then, the pod pops and out hatch a number of children who take a liking to Hyperion.
With the A.I.M. team being escorted from the Savage Land, Captain Marvel reports to Captain America that the sixth and final site is secure. We then cut to Norway, where another team of A.I.M. have discovered a seventh site…
